Director Sam Raimi is one of those filmmakers that indies can look up to as a God. A creative talent who (literally) trounced through swampland to get his film ‘out there’ back in ’78. The film was THE EVIL DEAD and was at the forerunner of ‘video nasties’ in the UK when VHS was starting out. It also spawned two of the most memorable horror sequels of all time.
He went on to direct those three campy Spiderman films. Pay day. But we can forgive him for that.
His new film, DRAG ME TO HELL, takes him back to his roots (sort of like the ones that sexually violate a poor girl in The Evil Dead) as a master of horror, gore, suspense and tension. I hope it can arrive and showcase Sam for everything he is capable of — bitch slap these sloppy, cheesy horror films that are getting away with a genre that needs to know better!
DRAG ME TO HELL opens 29 MAY 2009. If you’re going to be at SXSW, you’re in for a treat!
