Watching the WATCHMEN Box Office is probably going to be more interesting than the film itself

I for one openly admit I had no f*cking idea what WATCHMEN was until promotional material started to appear about the film.  By now, of course, we realize that it was originally a graphic novel which has been adapted into a film by Warner Brothers.

I’m not going to delve into the legal battle that happened between studios WB and Fox for the distribution rights.  Bottom line is, they reached an agreement last month and the film will come out on the advertised date of MARCH 6 2009 (press reviews are already popping up online).

What does interest me a great deal is who on Earth will be going to watch WATCHMEN!?  OK, no doubt whatsoever it will win the box office weekend when it opens.  That much is a given.  But there are folk out there signing high praises for this film and expecting ‘big numbers’. Comparisons even to THE DARK KNIGHT? Are they kidding?

Other comic book movies have found success in the recent boom of comic book adaptations because they are based on pop culture ICONS. Batman, Spiderman, Iron Man, X-Men, Hulk, Superman (oh, wait… forget that last one. That most recent film was absolute shit.)  A large portion of the box office success for these films has to be contributed to a reasonably majority of the audience who were not aware the film was being made, saw the poster, saw a superhero they recognized and bought a ticket.  Children and ‘young adults’ especially.

One could assume WATCHMEN needs to successfully cash-in on the ‘dark comic book movie’ appreciation seen on screen lately, thanks to Chris Nolan’s Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and to a lesser extent Favreau’s Iron Man. It will also need to kick ass from start to finish and get a decent word-of-mouth out the the moviegoers who don’t bother with internet blogs, online trailers and goss.  The last graphic novel adaptation to do this successfully was probably 300 – also directed by Watchmen director Zack Snyder. Seem promising.

More than any other film in a while, I am very much looking forward to watching how the box office of Watchmen will play out.  I personally believe that will be more entertaining than the film itself.

congrats howdy. your page is looking good.

watching the box office won't be half as fun as watching and rewatching the film though.

Thanks Daft, appreciate you stopping by. Yes I'm afraid I will be swayed on my opinion – and I do sincerely hope that is the case. I'm going to see it tomorrow.
