THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE trailer caters accordingly

Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice trailer is clearly not out to impress me or anyone else without an interest in this genre of film. Nicolas Cage is himself all over again (albeit this time with a wig and a hat) and the visual effects were blatant enough to remove me from the two minute trailer — I can just imagine what sitting through the film and being bombarded with all these unrealistic effects moments will be like. There’s nothing appealing here unless you’re a Harry Potter fan interested in venturing outward a little, or you dig on Nic Cage.

What the trailer does do is cater to its potential audience accordingly. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice seems filled with enough typical dramatic music, state-of-the-art visual effects and enough funny quips to usher in the folk that don’t know any better. It’s a popcorn movie and it’s okay with that – I should be, too.

Hell, for all I know this might turn out okay. But all we have to go by is this trailer and therefore I’m unconvinced:

Loosely adapted from the classic story from Fantasia, and based in modern-day Manhattan, Nicolas Cage plays Balthazar Blake, a sorcerer who recruits and trains a young protege (Jay Baruchel) to help fight the forces of darkness. Celebrity illusionist Drake Stone (Toby Kebbell) joins forces with an evil sorcerer named Horvath (Alfred Molina), to “gain ultimate powers.” The film, also features Teresa Palmer (Bedtime Stories) as Baruchel’s love interest and Monica Bellucci (Passion of the Christ, The Matrix Reloaded) as Veronica, a sorceress and the long-lost love of Cage’s character. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is released July 16 2010.
