Tron Legacy

The 80′s are back in a big way. In fact, all things retro seem to be as hip and cool as they’ll ever be at the moment. One could theorize that this trend usually occurs at the turn of each decade as a new generation begins to search for some originality in their culture. By venturing back and borrowing styles and trends from decades past they might ensure they appear nothing like any generation to come. It also harks back to what that generation’s parents grew up on, and baby – fluorescent colours, old-school synthesizer beats and the death of Michael Jackson have ensured the 80s get a second chance.

So, this helps make Disney’s upcoming Tron Legacy a kickass idea for two reasons:
One, it harps back to the innocence of the 80s where there was no internet and computer games in popular culture were still a brand new concept. We remember the good ol’ days as we kick back to see something completely new, and the kids who never knew the original believe they are seeing something truly unique for the first time.
Two, Disney get to tap that recent interest in all-things-80s without slaughtering the original by producing a remake (sadly an all-too predictable move these days).  Cleverly, they’ve gone ahead with a sequel instead of a remake. An extension on the original 1982 classic Tron which was directed by Steven Lisberger, will ensure Tron indeed has a ‘Legacy’ instead of a bastardized carbon copy.

Interestingly, Tron was so revolutionary in its time that after the film was released the Academy disallowed its nomination into any visual effects categories, stating that using computer technology was ‘cheating’. I guess quality CGI has the last laugh, eh?

Tron Legacy will hit cinema screens in 3D digital on December 17 2010… yes, you still have to wait a year. But let that anticipation build as you gawk at the inspiring teaser poster recently released by Dinsey:

  1. I do recall reading an interview where the producer or director or someone important said Tron Legacy will do what the Original Tron did for cinema…

where is this being applied? I think i missed it…
