I might be more jealous of director Sam Mendes than most guys are of Brad Pitt (bear with me…). Brad Pitt gets to play kickass characters in equally (usually) kickass movies, is generally considered one of the sexiest men on earth and gets to sleep with Angelina Jolie.
Sam, on the other hand, has won an Oscar , directed brilliant pieces of cinema (Road to Perdition, American Beauty) and best (or worst) of all, he gets to go to bed with Kate Winslet every night. That sounds damn fine to me! I’d hate the guy if I wasn’t such a fan.
Word has it Mr. Mendes is in discussions to direct the 23rd James Bond film — which is yet to have a title. Apparently it was Bond himself, Daniel Craig, who insisted those with the purse strings get Mendes on board after the last Bond film, Quantamn of Solace (2008), received some flack (you think?).
Mendes behind a Bond film? I’d get behind that. I didn’t enjoy the last two 007 flicks — but that’s just me. Some might argue that Bond needs to be less about substance (which Mendes would undoubtedly bring) and more about the action and lavish women. True. But after Quantum of Solace, taking a gamble with Mendes wouldn’t be such a bad thing. I’m confident he can direct action as well as thought-provoking drama. I’m confident the man could direct anything.
Keep in mind news that Mendes is directing the 23rd Bond film is still ‘in discussion’. Nothing’s actually signed on any dotted lines yet.
