Spun out watching BURIED footage

I’ve mentioned before how I can’t get on board with Ryan Reynolds. Something about the guy continues to be stagnant in everything I see him in. When I heard about him being the lead in Buried, which is playing at Sundance this year, I thought the concept could help Reynolds deliver a solid effort– possibly even a breakout performance. A teaser trailer for the film has been released online, thanks to MTV.

Cleverly done, the teaser is poor, gritty video footage of Ryan Reynolds as Paul, recording himself detailing his situation while trapped in his underground coffin. Thankfully his flash flight goes out part way through to add dramatic effect.

I wish I could say the teaser excited me more than it did, but it didn’t raise my anticipation for Buried any more than I already had. I am still intrigued to see it, even despite what appears to be some stale moments from Reynolds.

Accompanying the teaser is a clip lifted from the film which shows the scene that leads to Paul having to record the video on his phone. Seems director Rodrigo Cortés believes the best way to lock us in with Paul and highten the tension is to rotate the camera constantly, and when it finally does settle on a ‘static’ shot, give the zoom lever on the lens a few flicks to keep us guessing. The slight jolt of zooming back and forth intermittently is a style that has always been lost on me and breaks me away from the performance. I’m promising myself not to get all negative about it until I actually see the complete film. I still hope to be pleasantly surprised.

You can watch the clips below. They’re hosted by MTV so look out for the 30 second ad before the real content gets under way:
