SCOTT PILGRIM’s trailer Vs. your eyes

SCOTT PILGRIM’s trailer Vs. your eyes

Mar 26

I was only interested in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World for one reason: Director Edgar Wright. His incredible blend of entertaining style and surprising substance have left a great taste in my mouth after viewing his short-yet-growing catalogue of films.

I know nothing of the book(s). Nothing of the plot, characters, or anything about the story. Having just seen Universal’s first trailer for the upcoming Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World film adaptation, I want to keep it that way. I’m surprised how convinced and hyped I am to see this film after just a few murmers online and what is without a doubt one stellar, intriguing trailer.

I’ve read some people complaining about star Michael Cera (as usual) and how he might be mis-cast. Not being familiar with the original material helps in this case because I have no reference I couldn’t care less if he suits the part or not — he will forever be Scott Pilgrim now. I don’t mind his style of comedy and he appears comfortable in this role. I’m sure it’ll play out fine.

The pacing of the trailer is well executed, starting with a romantic comedy sort of pace (which reminded me a lot of Eternal Sunshine of A Spotless Mind, indecently)… but before throwing itself face first into action packed, highly violent moments of real-life cartoon fighting sequences inter-cut with witty quips that don’t linger or pause. Then it’s done, just like that. My eyes are still wide-eyed. The throw-back to good old 60s Batman BAN! POW! KABOOM! graphics with added sound effects and effective CGI animation is going to be a nice touch. I’m assuming they’re taking the cells from the comic book literally.

Not knowing anything about the entire plot or exactly where the film is coming from excites me. I love seeing films when I know nothing about them and being pleasantly surprised upon viewing. The internet has gone a long way to spoiling the mystique that can surround films.

After the originality suggested in this fantastic trailer, I’ll be doing my best to avoid all-things Scott Pilgrim from now on until I can slip into a cinema seat and watch the entire film uninterrupted. Until then, I’ll re-watch the same trailer I’ve seen a couple more times. As should you:

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World opens in the UK on the 6th of August 2010, the US on 13th of August, and in Australia on the 26th of the same month
