Angelina Jolie has me convinced. I’m hooked. I’ll see just about anything she’s in at this point. She’s proven that she looks fantastic and can deliver a required performance while doing so no matter the genre of film. Hell, I even went and saw Wanted that time… and her ass shot was so worth it. The rest if the film, not so much.

Seriously, though– the woman has depth. She deserves the Oscar she has in her trophy cabinet along with the nominations. She also deserves to be gawked at because she’s appropriately stunning, even when not dressed provocatively. I’m happy I can keep her straight in my head this way and not let her personal tabloid life get in the way.

Which brings me to her latest, Salt. Yeah, I had to double-take the title, too. If you see the trailer which was released last November (a new one is due this week) then you’ll see the name makes sense. You can watch the embedded trailer below. Still, it feels funny to say. Salt. I guess I’m too familiar with Hollywood’s Adjective Noun titles.

The trailer plays as standard, though certain elements are (quite deliberately) left in the air. It starts like a police drama and winds up a bit like a flat-out action film with some pretty neat stunts, car chases, a glimpse of raunchy sex and some fist/gun fights. Yet there’s mystery and intrigue fuelling the plot which should ultimately paint it as a thriller… there’s enough here to potentially make Salt worth checking out when it releases (July 29 in the States, August 19 Down Under), depending on what it plays against.

Angelina Jolie stars as Evelyn Salt, a CIA officer who swore an oath to duty, honor, and country. When she is accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy, Salt goes on the run to clear her name and ultimately prove she is a patriot. Using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative, she must elude capture and protect her husband or the world’s most powerful forces will erase any trace of her existence.
