What’s not to like about THE OTHER GUYS?

I click ‘play’ on the trailer for The Other Guys with caution. Mark Wahlberg pisses me off, I don’t find Will Ferrell nearly as funny as people claim, and Cop Out already butchered the buddy-cop comedy this year. What the fuck could possibly be right with this? Just about everything, it turns out… Even the stunning Eva Mendes made me double-take as she cameos part way through– I had no idea she was in this. Expecting to get a headache from rolling my eyes over and over again I was instead entertained, enthused and made to laugh. I can’t very well deny that now, can I?
I’m equally impressed with the casting of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson as kickass partners to aid the dopey antics of Wahlberg and Ferrell. Some may scoff at this type of film, but there’s no question this kind of comedy genre (big-names, big-studio) has a place on the film landscape that makes a bucket load of money– especially on DVD and TV rights once the box office has been and gone. I doubt it will be a long-standing classic, but The Other Guys sure does look impressive as a standalone comedy this year.
I had slightest suspicions this might be worth checking when Columbia Pictures released their groovy motion poster in March (embedded below). Having perked my interest, this surprisingly funny trailer has backed it up a great deal. Hopefully it isn’t one of those all-too-familiar situations where all of the funny/best bits appear in the trailer (which, funnily enough, was precisely the case for Cop Out), but it still has my dockets come opening week– which is 6 August in the States, no Aussie dates announced just yet.

I like that Marky Mark can take a good joke, but I'm with you on becoming slightly weary of Will Ferrell. Hopefully The Other Guys does turn out to be a worthy standalone film like you say!
