Steven Spielberg’s next movie is about … a horse

May 04

I suppose once you’ve done sharks, snakes, dinosaurs, and aliens (several times), it’s time to move on to a more homely, less exotic animal: the humble horse. War Horse follows the adventures of a … horse … as it is taken away from its home farm and thrust into service in World War I, where it experiences first-hand the horrors of war, and the extent of man’s inhumanity to man. It’s based on a children’s novel of the same name, which is apparently told from … the horse‘s perspective.

I know Spielberg is some kind of hotshot genius and all that, and I love the majority of his filmography … but I doubt even he can replace a human protagonist with a horse and manage to keep the film compelling. And I can’t help but wonder what demographic they’ll be aiming for — I know a lot of girls who love horses, and I know a lot of guys who are fascinated by war. Either this film will miraculously bring everyone together and make a billion dollars in the process, or each side will be turned off by the mutual exclusivity of the core subjects.

Spielberg’s been tossing up some boring-sounding projects for a while (Abraham Lincoln and / or George Gerswhin biopics, The 39 Clues, Robopocalypse), but he’s also had his eyes on some genuinely interesting scripts (Interstellar, Flowers For Algernon, Pirates Latitude [maybe]). Maybe he’s just trolling those of us who follow movie news, but this decision seems to have come straight out of left field.

Expect my indignant confusion to come to an end on the 10th of August 2011, when War Horse is due to hit screens. Did I mention it’s about a horse?
