THE KILLER INSIDE ME trailer is both gorgeous and disturbing

It might be unkind to call Michael Winterbottom a glorified troll, but to many people, that’s what he is. His long and storied filmography is peppered with incisive and provocative projects that have fallen flat (9 Songs) as often as taken hold (The Road To Guantanamo).

Whatever you may think of Winterbottom (either as a perverted sociopath or artistic genius), the trailer for his latest film The Killer Inside Me is probably the best-shot slab of film I’ve seen in months. The colour, the light, the framing, the art design and the timing all come together and just … work: I’m interested to see this flick based on its photography alone.

The story, on the other hand, is viciously dark. From what I can gather, it sees psychopath Casey Affleck killing people, talking about killing people, and planning to kill people, with little attention paid to tacking on a moral compass to make it all okay (a la TV’s Dexter). Casey Affleck is a fine actor — if you haven’t seen Gone Baby Gone, do so now; go on, I’ll wait — and he seems to pull off the whole “I’m a maniac with no regard for human life” look quite well.

The Killer Inside Me played Sundance last year, and was met with a hail of controversy, over plot points you can spoil for yourself if you want. I think I’ll wait till I’ve seen the film myself before making a judgment of my own. Expect a limited release in your territory some time next month (June 2010). Did I mention it’s got Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson?
