THE THREE-D MUSKETEERS has a cast

I’m not sure there’s much any writer, director, impressive cast or studio marketing could do to increase my enthusiasm about a Three Musketeers movie beyond the very low levels I possess at the moment. Two studios are trying to get two ‘Musketeers’ movies made right now– and they’re both hoping there is still a fan-base out there that will buy into the classic action-adventure period piece (I anticipate heavy guitar riffs in the trailers) and, of course, the availability to watch them in the mega-terrific super-awesome THREE DEE.
News broke today that Summit have a cast in place for their upcoming The Three Musketeers 3D, being directed by Paul WS Anderson (the other studio fast-tracking their ‘Musketeers‘ is Warner Brothers). Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans and Matthew Macfadyen have been cast as Porthos, Athos and Aramis, while that-cool-German-guy from Inglourious Basterds, Christoph Waltz, will play antagonist Cardinal Richelieu. We’ll also be able to see voyeur set photos of Milla Jovovich wearing some skimpy 17th Century gear once production gets underway because she’s also been cast as Milady. As if that weren’t enough, Paul WS Anderson is also in talks with Orlando Bloom and Logan Lerman to appear.
So, that’s the casting news– but what really caught my attention about this announcement was the fact that, yes, the damn thing will be in 3D. And that C+ at-best director Paul WS Anderson will be helming the project (once he’s done filming the latest Resident Evil, that is). Summit must have faith in Anderson being able to deliver a product to the screen that will have you and I going to buy a ticket. Asked about his take on The Three Musketeers, Anderson offered:
“We are definitely modernizing ‘The Three Musketeers’ without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece… But in our film, corsets and feathered hats don’t take center stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure.
What’s a Three Musketeers movie without the tights, corsets and feathered caps? Are we to assume it will (predictably) attempt to be a much ‘darker, gritter take’ on the story? More importantly– could Anderson re-group Bryan Adams, Rod Stuart and Sting for another love ballad rehash like in 1993? That, at least, would be something to look forward to.
