EASY A trailer: good jokes, bad music

Emma Stone has become Hollywood’s go-to girl for teen comedies. Good for her! She’s got a sweet and earnest demeanour, and, vitally, she has solid comic timing, so I don’t mind at all when I find out she’s featuring in a new movie here or there. This is the first movie where she’s starring, though, and that’ll make a big difference from seeing her acting as support in the likes of Superbad and Zombieland (and The House Bunny, which we’ll forget about for now).

The movie’s  bout a girl — Stone — who pretends to have sex with boys so they can become popular (I guess this might make sense in a high school?). Some hoity-toity religious nut (Amanda Bynes, not getting cuter with age) decides to piss on Stone’s parade, though, calling her out for adultery. If you know anything about the Scarlet Letters, then you now get the title of this film. Congratulations. If you don’t get it they go to great lengths to explain it in the trailer, so don’t feel left out.

Stone is surrounded by a team of teen nobodies, but some of the adult cast might help bring more wary punters to the cinema: there’s Stanley Tucci (who gets the best line in the trailer), Lisa Kudrow, Malcolm McDowell, and Thomas Haden Church, which ain’t a half-bad cast.

Seems like Easy A might be a fluffy and amusing teen flick with something rare for the genre: a message. It’s too early to tell if it’s a “religion is silly” message, but it can’t be a coincidence that many prominent real-world atheists wear big red ‘A’ pins to publicly announce their lack of faith. Even if it has nothing to do with that, it still seems to have a nice pro-choice message, pointing out that adultery — as defined by Christians as pre-marital sex — is something of a victimless crime.
