Surprise! SUPER 8 viral counted down to nothing

Surprise! SUPER 8 viral counted down to nothing

May 17

I was expecting at the very least a release date. Perhaps a synopsis, or some back-story. Or a link to further viral bullshit. I was not expecting … whatever the hell did happen. I turn now to internet supersleuth WikiBruce to tell me what the hell is going on.

When the countdown ended the silly faux computer program thing’s code changed and gave the option to print something. What came up next was a pair of pictures, from a fake newspaper. They both had a couple of big Xs marked on them, and when one was rotated 180 degrees and aligned with the other’s Xs some words were highlighted. What are those words? Those words are:

no certainty if a live may be after us we go underground

May I be the first to congratulate you: whoop-de-fucking-do. And before you get all “See, the viral marketing’s working on you, you’re posting it!” let me remind you that I was going to see Super 8 even before this stupid viral thing came along, and that I’m using this as an example of how not to market your film. I wish JJ Abrams would go the Christopher Nolan route and remain mysterious and intriguing, rather than opaque and time-wasting.

  1. Mr Nolan is simply NOT giving us any information. Thats it. WOW call a parade for him. *insert sarcasm*. What he is doing for Inception hasn't even got me hyped for the movie. The only reason i am seeing it is the excellent trailer, The great(well looks great) story, Dicaprio and Nolan. THATS IT. No excellent marketing has convinced me to see this…he has done nothing extraordinary for this film. he simply has VERY good “suits” who are hiding every little piece of information from us.

Mr Abrams is giving “those” kind (referring to no-life's who want some form of glory and spend hours deciphering them) a detailed mouse hunt trying to find information out. He is actually going the full 9 yards to provide viral marketing for this film. And for that i commend him.

JJ did exactly the same thing for that TV show that came on a few years back… what was that damn show called?… Oh Yeah! – LOST!!!!!!!!!!! I distinctly (and frustratingly) remember following link after website link, watching for “clues” and hints, etc. And then absolutely everyone else got on the same wagon. Some of these fanboy sites were so slickly produced and convincing, it became hard to tell the difference between viral and official work…

Anyways, after dragging the whole schmozzle out for so long, I got fed up and stopped watching one of my all-time favourite programs. All because the additional bullshit that went with the show led to even more stupendous, compelling and ultimately confusing bullshit (much like the shows plot)!

  3. I remember my first taste ever of viral was LOST. I think it was between s1 and s2 (i stopped watching shortly after s2 started: Also i was 14) when you had to go to this website to do with the dharma initiative. Back then (not knowing what viral was) it felt pretty cool being emerssed in the world.

However the reason i stopped was finding the time every week…i wouldnt mind rewatching LOST but im afraid once the last episode happens someones gonna ruin the whole 6 seasons for me

I never bothered with Lost viral. Like you I gave up on it, but I gave up after the end of the first season. I've recently got later seasons on DVD, and watching them on DVD, in quick succession, is infinitely more compelling than watching one episode per week. They yank you around like a bunch of douchebags, that's for sure, and all the Dharma initiative bullshit doesn't help, but it's actually a pretty good show otherwise.

That's what I'm saying: you shouldn't have to do anything to sell your film. If it's good, people will come. A trailer, a poster with some names on it — sold. I don't want a single second of Inception spoiled (I haven't seen the new trailer for instance), and doing all this viral crap would burn me out before I've seen a single frame of the film. I'd much rather go into a movie dead cold than with preconceived buzz formed by the diverting viral advertising.

  6. Not blu-ray:O what is this froley!!!

respect just went out the window…

haha nah jokes their BLOODY expensive

However i went tO JB's online store to prove a point but got bounced back…:S their not that more expensive than DVD. BUT then again those prices are way to expensive for the earlier seasons

Yeah the DVDs and Blu Ray are like within $10 of each other. And they're all way too expensive! Well now you mention it, I bought S2 and S3 a year ago on DVD for like $20 each (still haven't watched them yet …) and I got S4 the other day on Blu from Ebay for $50. So I think from S4 on I'll just get the Blus. Even if that means saving up extra. Gotta give my PS3 SOMETHING to do!

I too have the first few seasons on DVD and they're still shrinkwrapped… I moved on to a couple of new favourites that I re watch over and over (Entourage and Heroes)….and never seem to get around to catching up with the island. Having said that, I'll probably get the whole set once the final season is over and available at a decent price, just to complete the collection. I've no doubt that getting comfy and seeing them back to back without the distracting adverts, people gossiping around the water cooler (“…and what about when Sawyer…*gasp*…”I know, right!) and media washout will improve the experience, but I just don't care enough yet. :-p

Haha i use my ps3 as my main entertainment hub.

oh BTW sorted out disquss so i can now SEE your replies, but i just gotta start from scratch on my old account…so expect more arguments mr froley;-) haha

Yeah I know the feeling! With the season finale days away — and they promise to wrap at least some of the unanswered questions up — I think now's the time to finally catch up on it all. I just can't get past the number of times people say “Hey” in a single episode. Drives me nuts. Real people don't talk like that!

  11. Froley

Yeah I use my PS3 to record TV, play DVDs and MP3s … but there aren't any good games for PS3 that I can't get on PC, and Blu-rays are too expensive …

Bring it on, Mr Parry, your comments are always welcome and appreciated here!

Did you see that comment about George Lucas towards the Lost producers “Congratulations on pulling off an amazing show. Don’t tell anyone … but when ‘Star Wars’ first came out, I didn’t know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you’ve planned the whole thing out in advance”

Thank you i enjoy your site

and im not done with it yet either…captain howdy should be receiving a package sometime…

  14. Froley

Oh my, I was JUST coming here to link you to that myself! Haha! Yeah I read it yesterday. It's funny that I can't imagine George Lucas watching TV like a regular person. I keep expecting his house to be full of ewoks and droids and like holographic interfaces and stuff.

  15. Stephen Parry

muhaha beat ya to it! Yeah i cant imagine hollywood directors even watching other peoples movies. I can imagine the phone call to Steven (Speilberg) “Hey Steve Lost's on tonight, bring the popcorn yeah?”
