YOU WILL MEET A TALL DARK STRANGER poster confirms less is more

I thoroughly enjoy a simple, creative movie poster. No floating heads, no loud or unnecessary colours and no ridiculous taglines in predictable places. I was already keen to see Woody Allen’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger before I saw this fantastic poster. I especially like that it falls back on the film’s premise rather than a cookie-cutter poster layout that otherwise doesn’t hint at anything about this story. It’s just clever. The film was officially selected and is screening at Cannes Film Festival right now, boasting an impressive cast of talent that includes Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts, Gemma Jones, Freida Pinto and Lucy Punch.

You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger is written and directed by Woody Allen and hits US screens 21 September. No Australian dates announced as yet.

That font is terrible, ruins the posters.

Its like someone from film school scanned the drawing in, went to paint and added that with the most basic font that came predefined

Would you prefer the JONAH HEX font? I like this font. It's classy, mature, serif … all the things I like in a font. Looks kind of bookish, too, and I like books. Love hearts are a bit naff — but hey! You can't have everything, right?

  3. The hearts obviously represent a playing card, Froley. The Ace of Hearts, to be exact. I agree, the font is classy and the poster is pure in its simplicity. If it were a DVD cover in my hand, I'd definitely flip it for a blurb.

  4. it looks like a typical Woody Allen film poster. A lot of his film posters have been very simple, minimalist, and clean cut. I love it.

Er, yes, I got the playing card reference, and I don't mind that. But the hearts LOOK a bit naff. I don't like how the white seems to bleed into them. That said, this poster is much more interesting than the vast majority of floating heads, etc.

I cant see anything classy about it. I would be more inclined to turn the cover if the title wasn't there, looking for the name of the film.

Jonah Hex font would not suit this and you know it…but cmon the simplicity is refreshing but THAT FONT…the focus is on it and they choose that? Why not hand written like the drawn on hearts?

I like that font. Have you seen the font we use on this site? Compare it to the font on the poster. Bookish serif fonts are classy because they're bookish: they remind you of books, and the sophisticated, elitist culture surrounding them.

I was a little confused as to the discrepancy between the rock solid font and sketchy hearts — hence my “love hearts are a bit naff” line. Funny that you say the font should be sketchy like the hearts, and I say the hearts should be solid like the font. We both want the poster to be slightly more coherent, but we want it in different ways!
