SEX AND THE CITY 2 international poster is about as funny as a brick to the face

There are a lot of things in this world I don’t really care about. Shopping is one of them. Soccer (sports in general, really) is another. So when I first saw the below poster I thought to myself “What an obscure tagline.” Hours later it hit me — that World Cup thing is coming up soon, and Sex And The City 2 is coming out around the same time. So what do you do when your potential audience has to pick between you and a competitor? Trash-talk them, of course.

High heels are ugly. That’s a bad start. The symbol of the high heel is even uglier. The fact that women still think high heels are a good thing blows my mind — male chauvinism is so powerful that even women have been brainwashed into following the socially damaging trend of objectifying themselves, with no sense of irony or even acknowledgement. And the fact that it’s that particular image, used to crush the soccer ball, really galls me. I mean, sport is about competition, rules, gameplay, teamwork — valuable and useful skills for social organisms like us — and serves as a healthy way to vent the competitive and violent urges of our psyches. High heels and shopping — “not so much.”

So Sex And The City 2‘s message that being fashionable and sexy and getting laid are more important or valid than a bit of the old sporty action is already facepalm-worthy in its inanity, but the fact that it caters to the female demographic as some kind of alternative to the World Cup is even worse. “You’re a girl, so instead of watching sports, you should focus on shopping, high heels, waxing your body, and having sex with rich, successful men.” Right.

Anyone who knows me knows I hate watching sport. Most people I know spend a few hours a week watching footy or cricket or soccer (depending on the season), and that’s fine, but I’d much rather spend that time reading a book or playing a game or learning something new or watching a movie. Now, though, in response to this poster, I might make an exception. I might actually watch some of the Cup just to spite Sex And The City 2.

Or, quite simply… go see this flick while your boyfriend/husband watches soccer.

Throw the word “vicariously” in there if it helps. Watching soccer may not be productive, but at least it doesn't promote socially harmful ideas.

Lucky that the girlfriend is seeing it with her girlfriends…dodge this bullet.
But to be honest when i saw this poster among the other releases over at slashfilm, it was honestly the best poster there (among jonah hex, twilight etc)

Theres more symbolism in this chick flick poster than any in that list.
    “Stepping on a mans balls”
    “SA World cup”
“Deceit by controlling a man to “score”"
“Go see S&C2 instead of the world cup”
    and others

The producers know their target audience and it is chicks. They will play on this and hell they dont even need to do much marketing for this film. Just a poster to remind them its out and its “Girls night out” and it will make a shitload of money…

I think your being a bit harsh on the poster, even though all of us here would dread to get dragged along to this movie, you must step back and realise who is actually going to see this movie, females, their gay friends and boyfriends being dragged along

  4. I totally agree with everything you said Robin. I think Sex and The City has always sent a mixed message about female empowerment. For every step forward that the characters take towards being independent women, they take three steps back when they 'go shopping to solve their problems' or when Carrie still falls for 'Mr Big' even after he repeatedly treats her like shit. Seriously, it drives me nuts to see them actually write a storyline where she fobs off many “nice guys” in order to be with the asshole. Don't we get that enough in real life?

Also, I agree about the high heels.

The fact that SATC2 has inherent support is part of what disturbs me. It promotes backwards morals that we really can't afford moving forward into the new millennium. The fact that many women lap it up is depressing. Sure it'll make loads of money, I never said it wouldn't, but the negative impact it has on Western society is what I'm complaining about.

I know right! They constantly treat the characters like crap, yet promote the show / movies like they're gospel. I know a lot of women who take this show seriously as well, especially the fashion side of it. Shudder.

Thats true, and i suppose promoting backward morals will always be around. From young with barbie and bratz to old with sex and the city.

  8. Froley

It might be around for our lifetime, but hopefully not forever.

It’s actually a very sexy poster and looks like it could be Paris Hilton’s Foot.
