Reel Short: MUTO

Animators are only limited by the stretch of their imagination. They can choose any ‘camera’ angle in any setting, achieve any physical feats for a character and aren’t limited by production logistics like weather and traffic. The flip side of that coin being they must devote many more tireless hours to produce their desired result.
So it’s fair to say that animated short films are almost always a triumph of endurance. Consider, then, an animated film that incorporates live action footage with it’s animated parts. Take this short film Muto for a example, which features the animated character existing on city street walls and fences. This effect was achieved using stop-motion, the process which involves taking a single frame, re-animating the subject, taking another frame and repeating the process for every second of the film. 35mm film screens at 24 frames per second. The sheer size of this animation means the animator(s) had to work quickly and allow for changing light. A staggering challenge that has produced a beautiful and memorable short film.
