ATLAS SHRUGGED, agreed to last-minute low-budget no-talent movie adaptation

For those of us still struggling to comprehend the literary labyrinth that was the Animorphs series, Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged is a fiction book (mostly) about philosophy. It presented such a strong philosophy, in fact, that “Randian Objectivism” is a phrase tossed around with absolute nonchalance by people who know what the heck they’re talking about, much to the dismay of those who don’t.

The closest my generation gets to studying Randian Objectivism is playing BioShock. Those who’ve walked the watery halls of Rapture will remember a sunken city full of megalomaniacal monsters and ugly creatures twisted by their own greed — Objectivism allowed to run wild without any checking influence. Objectivism is essentially moral capitalism, driven by the belief “that the proper moral purpose of one’s life is the pursuit of one’s own happiness or rational self-interest.”

Now that the fun stuff’s over, why did I bring you here in the first place? Oh yeah, that’s right, they’re making a movie out of that book Atlas Shrugged. A producer named John Aglialoro bought the rights to Atlas Shrugged twenty years ago, and if he didn’t start shooting by mid-June 2010, he’d lose the rights. So he’s pulled the trigger on a shotgun production, shoehorning some guy called Paul Johansson, an actor and director from TV’s One Tree Hill (a show of which I have seen zero episodes), to direct and star in the film.

The production will cost a whopping $5 million, take an excruciating 5 weeks to shoot, and be full of actors you’ve never heard of. It first rolled camera this past weekend, just in time to beat the twenty-year deadline to begin production.

Let’s get this straight — rush-job, no-name talent, no big studio backing, and a hefty chunk of source material heavy enough to sink a ship: this movie will either be the greatest thing ever made, or an unqualified disaster. Am I the only one who thinks that material like this deserves something better than this?

A Paul Johansson in its natural habitat.

Yeah, seems like this wont see the light of day unless its MAGICALLY picked up at Caines or Sundance. But it seems he only shot it because well he had to, 20 years and he didn't do anything about it? Well theres clearly no passion behind this project.

Sad thing is, this will get made before Bioshock will be made…*shakes fist*

  2. If they ever make that BioShock movie I will cry for days. Why would you ruin a perfectly good interactive experience by making it non-interactive? BioShock does not work unless you're playing it.

Ah see i didnt love Bioshock for the interactive experience, i loved it for the rich environment set during the 60s. I loved how much depth Rapture provided and im always edging for more. So a Bioshock movie expanding on the universe i give thumbs up to.

  4. The “Would You Kindly” reveal didn't blow your mind and cause you to question every action you've ever taken in any video game in the history of forever? You must have a mind of steel!

  5. I'm 70% through that game. Still need to finish it…
