My wife, who is the most casual of movie-goers, just popped into my study (likely to ask me to wash the dishes or change the baby’s nappy– I’m not entirely sure) and caught me in the act of inserting that poorly composed ‘first look’ photograph into this post. She tilted her head ever so slightly and asked “Smurfs now? Really?”, even she is aware how painfully unnecessary the idea of a Smurfs live-action film is. I’m sure our soon-to-be-three-year-old will still own it on DVD eventually, just like he does Garfield, Alvin and the Chipmunks and every Disney and Pixar movie known to man (seriously).

Slashfilm posted this first look at the computer animated Smurfs as they will appear in the ‘live-action’ human world they accidentally find themselves in as part of the film’s highly original plot.

Before anyone has a sook about their childhood being somehow ruined by Hollywood (and please, I’m sick of hearing this over-exaggeration) expect The Smurfs to be targeted strictly at the 5-9-year-olds of today. I mean, were we really expecting a gritty, darker look at the Smurf characters? Consider director Raja Gosnell’s filmography to-date, for instance:

  • Beverly Hills Chihuahua
  • Yours, Mine and Ours
  • Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed
  • Scooby-Doo
  • Big Momma’s House
  • Never Been Kissed
  • Home Alone 3

Kinda says it all right there, really. I’m strangely looking forward to what should be a painful and disappointing teaser trailer in the near future.

The Smurfs is due for release in the States 3 August 2011.

Why bring them to the real world? There is no reason to. Im sure there is enough plot for them to stay in smurf-land and have some conflict there. Interms of making a movie i feel its a right time to make one, people aren't really watching the shows anymore and to reboot it with a movie is a logical business idea, follow it up with a tv series and it could be back onto making a cash flow.

However this movie is along the lines of Beverly Hills Chihuahua and looks like its done in poor taste.

I gladly accepted a Smurfs movie when it was rumoured, expecting them to use the name properly and create a movie filled with Nostalgia and aimed at kids(expected), but now that ive seen the teaser, this film is now officially not necessary.
