Look mate, we can do torture porn too: international trailer for Aussie film THE LOVED ONES

Torture porn is a genre people love to hate. They don’t hate to love it, though, judging by the outrageous quantities of dollars shit like Saw 11: Jigsaw Strikes Back and Hostel 8: The Enhosteling rake in on a regular basis. So isn’t it about bloody time a good old-fashioned Aussie knock-off was commissioned?

Apparently, yes: The Loved Ones, directed by Sean Byrne, is just such a film. The plot concerns … well, the plot concerns a guy getting tortured in pornographic detail. It’s different from Saw and Hostel only because of the sheer amount of the colour pink in the production design, and the presence of Aussie brogues instead of American shrieking.

I’d love to get behind my fellow Aussies and pat them on the back for making a good film, but I can only do that when they make a good film. The Loved Ones doesn’t look like a fun time at the movies, by anyone’s interpretation of the word “fun” (or “time,” for that matter), but to be fair, I haven’t actually seen it. And, as silly as the international trailer is, it does manage to convey a creepy sense of dread, so who knows? Maybe it’s a good movie despite all the torture-porn trappings after all.

The Loved Ones actually came out a year ago here; harrass your local video joint for a copy. It’s due in the States in November 2010, hence the trailer. Also, this trailer is a little bit spoilery, so view at your own discretion.
