Reel Short: BEING CARL WILLIAMS
Reel Short: BEING CARL WILLIAMS
Jul 11
Australians know who Carl Williams is because he was portrayed in a successful mini series which aired in 2007 called Underbelly. It had guns, money, tits and painted a colourful picture of the Australian underground crime world lead by Carl and his stooges… Actually, I have no idea– the show was complete shit, but Aussie audiences lapped it up because it was based on true stories. If only that could have helped the production value… anyway…
Abe Forsythe’s short film Being Carl Williams had audiences in hysterics when it took home the runner-up prize at the 2009 Tropfest Film Festival. It stars Gyton Grantley as himself, the actor, being confused for Carl Williams the gangster in ‘real life’. It’s still hilarious despite having never seen the show it’s founded on. The dry Aussie humour of the thugs gets me every time.
Of course, this could never happen now because the whole country knows Carl was bludgeoned to death with a bicycle pedal while serving time in prison earlier this year.
