Marketing team behind BURIED’s theatrical trailer know how to use Adobe After Effects

First popularised in the titles for Alfred Hitchcock‘s North By Northwest, and recently revived thanks to the digital revolution, the recent trend of kinetic typography is starting to wear thin on me.
The Lionsgate marketing team behind Rodrigo Cortes‘s Buried starring Ryan Reynolds have used the now-saturated technique for the film’s new theatrical trailer to undesired effect. Instead of delivering something original, as the film’s premise promises, the trailer feels like a cheap imitation of a first year designer’s portfolio.
It’s a shame because the first teasers for Buried showed great promise. The hook is that Reynolds gives his entire performance from the confides of a buried coffin for the duration of the movie. That’s enough to perk interest. Kinetic animation is not required. But they did it anyway…
