Aron Ralston is a name that conjures mixed emotions. His heroism in the face of disaster, and the burning light of human persistence that it represents, are inspiring; but the gory details of his escape are enough to give you a bad case of nausea.

After more than five days with his arm trapped under a boulder, Ralston deliberately broke both of the bones in his forearm and used a dull knife, in conjunction with a pair of pliers, to cut the arm off at the snap. He then rappelled down a 20m wall, and started the long hike through the Utah heat to his manual-transmission car, but was thankfully intercepted by a Dutch family on holiday, who gave him water — and two Oreos.

Anyway, Danny Boyle‘s directing the movie about Ralson’s ordeal, entitled 127 Hours and starring James Franco, and he promises that “The movie is going to be obsessive, and it will be for obsessives. You will want him to cut his arm off by the end.” I didn’t love Slumdog Millionaire like every other man and his dog seemed to, so for me, 127 Hours sounds like a return to form for the director who brought us 28 Days Later and Sunshine.

Meanwhile, does the real-world nature of this story hamstring the tension? Did you already know about Ralston’s ordeal, or did I just spoil it for you? And, vitally, will the Dutch folk with the Oreos make an appearance in the film? Here’s hoping.

127 Hours is due on 5 November 2010 in the States.
