LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS poster: knobbly knees and massive pillows

I think I get it. Get two well-known, attractive actors, take their clothes off, put them on a bed, sell a movie. But why is he covering his mouth? Why are their feet and knees so prominent in this shot? And where did they find pillows the perfect size to cover up their fiddly bits?
The trailer for Love And Other Drugs showed that the film would be a paint-by-numbers rom-com. I never really got on the Anne Hathaway bandwagon and I don’t know how I feel about Jake Gyllenhaal as a romantic lead, so I’m still pretty cold on the whole project (though I did like some of Ed Zwick‘s earlier films — specifically, the action films).
24 November 2010 is the day to see this one Stateside. Is that around the time of that Thanksgiving thing? No local release dates yet.

Well, it sure does have all the telltale signs of a by-the-numbers rom-com (read: predictable shit) but since breaking off into dramatic roles, such as Brokeback Mountain, Devil Wears Prada and Rachael Getting Married, Hathaway has been pretty solid, in performances and role choices. So with this theory, I don’t think she would have taken a role of a trashy lame rom com, as that would be a step in the wrong direction. Also Zwick and Gyllenhaal definently have talent, so I think it has a little bit of potential.
Although I generally hate Rom-coms, due to their predictable and nonsensical plots and general lack of imagination and humour, when they get it right, they can be extremely relatable and enjoyable. I’m thinking of He’s just not that into you, Knocked up, Clerks, (500) days of summer, and There’s something about Mary. So here’s to hoping.
Then again, she was also in Bride Wars …
