A comedy movie that sees Downey, Jr. reunited with Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang co-star Monaghan sparks my interest, but this trailer somehow manages to throws a bucket of icy cold water over that meek enthusiasm. Maybe the finished movie will be better, but this trailer for Due Date features way too much of Galifianakis reprising his emotionally stunted man-child schtick from The Hangover, and way too little of...

I reviewed Avatar on opening day. Fresh from watching the film, my mind had a tendency to focus on the trees rather than the woods, and, while the review still holds up, it could use some clarification.
Eight months have passed since then, the dust has settled, everyone’s absorbed Avatar into their consciousness, and the film’s due for re-release in six weeks’ time. What better time to reflect on the...

Bruce Willis and action are like rainbows and lollipops: they just go together. For everyone keen to wash the disappointing taste of Cop Out from their mouths, you can look forward to Red (trailer here), a spy-flavoured comic book adaptation featuring Willis alongside Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren. This first poster for the film wisely focuses on Bruce Willis, exploding backgrounds, handguns,...

Torture porn is a genre people love to hate. They don’t hate to love it, though, judging by the outrageous quantities of dollars shit like Saw 11: Jigsaw Strikes Back and Hostel 8: The Enhosteling rake in on a regular basis. So isn’t it about bloody time a good old-fashioned Aussie knock-off was commissioned?
Apparently, yes: The Loved Ones, directed by Sean Byrne, is just such a film. The plot...

Following on from my list last week about movies that people innocently mistake for science fiction, here’s a list of the opposite: five popular movies that people don’t usually think of as science fiction.
Science fiction hasn’t really been popular since the Golden Age ended forty years ago, but, following in the wake of Avatar, it’s likely that we’ll see a resurgence in the...

In an ironic twist on the Hollywood accounting nonsense I recently wrote some words about, James Cameron is set to rake in $350 million from the success of Avatar. That’s a lot of dollars.
How come he gets so much? Because he wrote, directed and produced the film; each one of those jobs probably came with a cent-per-dollar contract, and, being in control of the project in every meaningful way, he must...

You may not be aware that Australia has its own Dream, in joking response to the American one. The Australian Dream is to own a house in the suburbs and raise a family there, and to one day comfortably retire into a life of watching cricket and drinking beer.
How many movies have come out of America in the last decade bemoaning the belittling reality of living in a regular house just like everyone else?...

As a film-lover, I want to like David Fincher. Se7en and Fight Club were, as everyone knows, two of the defining films of the 1990s, and we’re still feeling the after-effects of their influence to this day. But 21st century Fincher is a bit harder to get into. I thought Zodiac was good, but not great, and I didn’t bother watching The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button when I found out how long it...

I’ve been looking forward to Tron: Legacy ever since I saw the first trailer in March. It’s not the story or the characters that grab me, but rather the pretty visuals and synthetic soundtrack. Something tells me, though, especially looking at the bike-race-crash stuff, that the movie will be more than a little bit silly when it comes out in December. Nevertheless, it continues to look gorgeous in...

Predators is a movie about a diverse bunch of assholes (one of them is even a woman – how inclusive!) getting their butts kicked by giant dreadlocked lizard men from space. It comes with Oscar-worthy pedigree in tow – in the form of Adrien Brody and Laurence Fishburne – and was produced under the auspices of cult hero / filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. So is it any good?
The short answer is “yes.” The...
