As if the trailer wasn’t confirmation enough, the names Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams pretty much confirm a kickass movie is right around the corner. Super 8 comes out June 10, Paramount have released a couple of images to make sure we keep talking about it. In no way would they entice anyone to go see it…

Mel Gibson’s refreshingly candid interview

Mel Gibson’s refreshingly candid interview

Apr 23

I could easily not act again. It’s not a problem. I’m going to do something now because I want to do it and because it’s fun.”

–Mel Gibson

Speaking to Deadline for the first time since one of his outbursts were secretly recorded and leaked online. Poor bastard keeps having the lowest points of his private life splashed in the media, it’s a train-wreck they can’t get enough of. Thankfully he seems grounded and accepts his mistakes– nobody can deny his talent. Beyond that, why should we care so much?

ATTACK THE BLOCK trailer: cocky London kids vs big furry aliens

ATTACK THE BLOCK trailer: cocky London kids vs big furry aliens

Apr 22

Alien invasion movies never get old, no matter how many shitty knockoffs (Battle Los Angeles, Skyline) Hollywood insists on making. Thank goodness for Attack The Block, then, which looks smart and visceral and surprisingly original, for a sub-genre that’s been around for about a century. This clip’s only a minute long, but I’m already sold.

No word on an Australian release date yet; keep an eye on DVD shelves towards the end of the year, I reckon.

30 MINUTES OR LESS trailer is fast and funny

30 MINUTES OR LESS trailer is fast and funny

Apr 22

Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer comes out swinging with his second movie, and this one looks just as fresh and energetic as the first. Stars Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari, due some time in August 2011. Also, the trailer’s red-band, so don’t watch it if you’re, like, twelve.

FAST FIVE reviewed

The middle act lags and the human drama is barely competent, but the surprisingly awesome action scenes more than make up for it.

Our reviews are short. Really short. Deal with it.

5 new DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 images to keep HARRY POTTER fans happy

5 new DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 images to keep HARRY POTTER fans happy

Apr 18

Warner Brothers don’t need to release much to keep fans hanging on. July 15 can’t come quick enough for Harry Potter fans desperately looking forward to the final instalment, …and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Yet, here are some images to make you go ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’.

SLEEPING BEAUTY trailer is gorgeously dark and moody

SLEEPING BEAUTY trailer is gorgeously dark and moody

Apr 16

Completely breaking away from the standard blueprint of typical Hollywood trailers, the trailer for Julia Leigh‘s Sleeping Beauty sets a dark mood from the very beginning. This Aussie film is creating some waves of attention after being selected for ‘Official Competition’ at Cannes.

Don’t worry– this isn’t a remake. Not a single dwarf to be seen.

Michael Bay talks about shooting TRANSFORMERS 3

Michael Bay talks about shooting TRANSFORMERS 3

Apr 16

Digital, no matter what people tell you, it’s bullshit. They say, “Oh, it looks just like film.” It doesn’t look like film and never will.”

Slashfilm have a neat Q&A with Michael Bay about Transformers 3. This is just one small quote among a series of fascinating insights — not just about Transformers, but about the state of Hollywood circa 2011. Recommended reading, but it’s long enough that you can get away with skimming parts.

Shakespeare-was-a-hack movie ANONYMOUS gets a trailer, too

Shakespeare-was-a-hack movie ANONYMOUS gets a trailer, too

Apr 15

Roland Emmerich has traded in world-shattering visual effects and thousand-foot-long marine iguanas for a stripped-back historical drama — and still the shonky visual effects dominate the trailer. I have no idea who’s who here, or who’s claiming what; I only know it’s about the “who-actually-wrote-Shakespeare’s-plays” debate (aka the “who-really-cares?” debate) from reading the synopsis a few months ago. Consider me far from sold.

This one’s also due in late September.

First trailer for ABDUCTION, starring Taylor Lautner

First trailer for ABDUCTION, starring Taylor Lautner

Apr 15

Don’t worry, there’s a bunch of ‘real’ actors here, too; playing spot-the-celebrity is half the fun of this trailer. I doubt the actual movie will be as fun. Lautner himself was a black hole of charisma in the Twilight franchise, but this film is designed to cater to his fanbase, so I’m sure it’ll do pretty good business.

Don’t expect to see this till the September holidays.

COWBOYS AND ALIENS trailer is exactly that

COWBOYS AND ALIENS trailer is exactly that

Apr 15

Jon Favreau gave up directing Iron Man 3 to pursue other projects, and this is one of them. Featuring a likeable cast (Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford and Sam Rockwell), a fresh setting, and a pretty cool set-up, this could be one of the better action flicks released this winter.

Check it out July/August-ish.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES of the trailer

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES of the trailer

Apr 14

Finally, a look at Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the pre-prequel to the classic Planet of the Apes. James Franco and Andy Serkis (Gollum) star, and Apple very smugly refuses to allow embedding, so you’ll have to follow the link below to see the goods.

Boo, Apple, boo! <– click here.

The first half of the trailer plays exactly like Deep Blue Sea (down to the notorious ‘as a side-effect, the animals grew smarter’ line), so it’s twice as dumb for repetition, but the second half looks like a barrel of — ahem — monkeys.

Go see it 5 August, 2011.
