An earnest and fresh legal drama that’s too shallow and self-contained to be as powerful as it wants to be.

Our reviews are short. Really short. Deal with it.

Peter Jackson details why THE HOBBIT is shooting at 48 frames-per-second

Peter Jackson details why THE HOBBIT is shooting at 48 frames-per-second

Apr 12

So we have lived with 24 fps for 9 decades--not because it's the best film speed (it's not by any stretch), but because it was the cheapest speed to achieve basic acceptable results back in 1927 or whenever it was adopted. ”

–Peter Jackson

In a surprisingly interesting facebook note (who knew, right?) director Peter Jackson has taken a moment to publish information on how and why he is shooting The Hobbit at 48 frames-per-second. A very tidy and interesting read for even a part-time movie buff.

Read the complete ‘note’ here.

Frightfully strange new poster for CARS 2

Frightfully strange new poster for CARS 2

Apr 12

Disney/Pixar (yeah, that’s a ‘thing’ now) have released this rather strange retro-style poster for the upcoming June release of Cars 2. Take from it what you will. I guess the film does have that whole international spy plot going on (according to the trailer).

You can click on the poster and inspect a nice high-res version, if you’re keen.

PASSION PLAY trailer has nothing to offer

PASSION PLAY trailer has nothing to offer

Apr 12

Seem like the producers and/or studio behind Passion Play are begging:

It stars Mickey Rourke, he’s a great actor that won an Oscar! Oh, and Megan Fox, she’s a sexy babe! And who doesn’t love Bill Murray, right? You should totally go see this because these wonderful actors are in it. Never mind any details on plot or character arcs, just know that it looks a little bit like a David Lynch film and it stars these wonderful people. Now, go… see it!

Sorry, but I’m far from convinced.

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN sees Rowan Atkinson back on the big screen

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN sees Rowan Atkinson back on the big screen

Apr 09

Rowan Atkinson is a very funny man. The first Johnny English movie (from 2003, with John Malkovich) was pretty okay, kind of like a British take on Austin Powers or Get Smart. 8 years on, it’s time for a reboot, and, once the trailer gets past the belaboured Batman Begins gags, some of it looks pretty darn funny.

Due 7 October 2011 in the UK. I’ll probably be in line to see it whenever it hits screens here.

DOLPHIN TALE trailer is almost unbearably pleasant

DOLPHIN TALE trailer is almost unbearably pleasant

Apr 09

The story is about a man (Morgan Freeman) who tries to build a prosthetic tail for an injured dolphin. If that doesn’t warm the heart, I don’t know what does. The trailer makes the second act look agonisingly long, as the audience waits to see whether or not the dolphin gets its tail in the end — but this is Hollywood, so the doubt is never too great.

Get ready to bawl your eyes out in September (US) and October (UK) 2011.

WARRIOR trailer: watch Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton beat the stuffing out of each other

WARRIOR trailer: watch Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton beat the stuffing out of each other

Mixed martial arts is one of the scariest sports since lions ate Christians. How such flat-out violence can be entertaining is beyond me, but luckily, this flick also promises family drama, which everyone can relate too. It’s interesting to see two up-and-comers cast in the lead roles; I just hope there’s more to the film that the trailer doesn’t spoil. Warrior is due September 2011.

CRAZY STUPID LOVE trailer is actually a little bit funny

CRAZY STUPID LOVE trailer is actually a little bit funny

While I think Steve Carell is well past his use-by date, putting him in a romantic-dramedy with Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Marisa Tomei and Julianne Moore seems like a stroke of genius. From the writers of Bad Santa (they direct movies now, too). Due 29 July 2011 in the States, 2 September in the UK.

HESHER trailer, in which Joseph Gordon-Levitt jumps off a flaming diving board

HESHER trailer, in which Joseph Gordon-Levitt jumps off a flaming diving board

Apr 07

Seriously, this is all you need to know:

  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt, sporting 90s Metallica-long hair and tats, jumps off a flaming diving board in the opening seconds.
  • Natalie Portman wears glasses.

A great trailer that will arouse your curiosity and let you know it’s as far from popcorn Hollywood as possible. I’m sold.

There’s no Aussie release date yet, but Hesher is released in the States in May.

Stop presses: the ENDER’S GAME adaptation will probably be hard to shoot

Stop presses: the ENDER’S GAME adaptation will probably be hard to shoot

Apr 06

You’ve got to have zero G training sequences. Are you kidding? We’re talking about shooting it every way you can: using tanks, using motion capture, using amazing acrobats, using an amazing space. But you have to have it, that’s part of the movie.”

Roberto Orci, speaking to io9 about the still-in-development-after-decades Ender’s Game adaptation. Gavin Hood is the latest director attached to the project — he of X-Men Origins: Wolverine: The Prequel: Part 1: The Beginning.

If they’re going to insist on ruining one of the best books in SF literature, they might as well ruin it properly, eh?
