A hairy new teaser poster for Disney’s TANGLED

A hairy new teaser poster for Disney’s TANGLED

Jul 30

Disney have released the first poster for their upcoming animated film Tangled.  Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi and Donna Murphy provide voices for Tangled, which takes a new spin on the Rapunzel character after the kingdom’s most wanted bandit tries to hide in her tower. Naturally, she’s filled with modern-day-woman empowerment and is not effected by his charm.

Animation fans are already raving about this one after the funny trailer, released back in June, underlined that Tangled will deliver the promise a fun-filled animation comedy for the whole family. In 3D, of course.

The poster simply says ‘Thanksgiving’, which is fucking pointless for anyone outside the U.S. This is why there are international posters and release dates, I guess. Anyway, it’s released on 24 November in the States and Canada, everywhere else will need to wait until December/January.

Call Sheet: A weekly run-down of movie casting news and rumours from around the web.

Comic-Con 2010 is underway in San Diego leading the way with most headlines across the web this week. Amongst all the preview footage, panels, exhibitions and guest appearances, only a handful of casting news has trickled out of the convention.

Without a doubt the biggest casting news out of Comic-Con came when the cast of The Avengers movie gathered on stage, live, in person, causing fans to go into shock-gasm at the pure awesomeness of the occurrence. Or so I’m led to believe. I’ll get excited if the film itself actually turns out to be any good. On stage were: Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chris Hemworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, and then Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) showed up and announced Mark Ruffalo will indeed be playing the new Bruce Banner/HULK, and Jeremy Renner will be Hawkeye. I have no doubt these silly hero names are fucking awesome if one is aware of the comic.

News that I actually did get excited about was that of Brad Pitt attaching himself to star in the movie adaptation of the Max Brooks apocalyptic zombie novel World War Z. It was common knowledge that Pitt’s production company Plan B had purchased the rights, but now that it is official Pitt will be the leading guy, a distributor and green-lit script seems likely. Brooks himself told MTV of the news.

Disney released a statement, detailing how director Guillermo del Toro surprised the 6,500 fans gathered at his Comic-Con panel with the announcement that he is currently developing a new film based on the classic Disney theme park attraction, The Haunted Mansion. Apparently it’s going to be fun for the whole family, but still scary. So really, not scary. At all.

Heat Vision notes that Simon Pegg is in talks to likely return as his MI:3 character Benji Dunn in Mission Impossible 4, should Paramount decide to green-light it. Any day now.

Slashfilm landed the scoop from producer Roy Lee that Tim Burton will be directing Universal’s ‘adaptation’ of Monsterpocalypse. What the fuck is Monsterpocalypse, you ask? I had no idea either… Apparently it’s a kaiju-themed collectible miniatures board game that involves battles against a variety of enemy monsters that take place in a metropolis. Paint it black, Tim.

Cinemablend talked to Anchorman director Adam McKay who confirmed there will be no Anchorman 2. Thank fuck for that.

Shocktilyoudrop reports that Daniel Radcliffe will star in a 3D supernatural thriller adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel The Woman In Black. It’s being produced by Hammer Films, the same company behind Let Me In. So long as he doesn’t wear glasses, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Variety reveals that Sam Raimi will be direct and produce Earp: Saints For Sinners, a modern-day reimagining of the classic western hero, Wyatt Earp. It’s based on the graphic novel of the same name created by Matt Cirulnick (who is also writing the screenplay) and David Manpearl. So much for Oz: The Great And Powerful and World of Warcraft (for now).

Deadline reports that Larry Charles (Borat, Bruno, Religulous) has signed on to direct Jim Carrey in the comedy Pierre Pierre. Carrey plays an obnoxious Frenchman who transports a stolen painting from Paris to London.

Finally, THR notes actress Katherine Heigl will star in Andy Tennant’s Adaline, a film about a young woman, born at the turn of 20th century, who is rendered ageless after an accident. I suspect it’s a romantic dramadey and Katherine will look stunning.

Call Sheet: Kevin Bacon, Amanda Seyfield, Nicolas Cage, Elizabeth Banks, Emma Stone, Mark Wahlberg and Philip Seymour Hoffman

Call Sheet: A weekly run-down of movie casting news and rumours from around the web.

X-Men: First Class continues to throw names all over the place with regards to casting, but only now do I recognize one of the stars: Kevin Bacon. Variety reports Bacon will play a lead villain while 20th Century Fox have also signed Jennifer Lawrence to play Mystique. The director of Kick-Ass, Matthew Vaughn, is behind this new X-Men flick.

Deadline reckons Mark Ruffalo is in ‘late-stage talks’ to play The Hulk in the new Avengers movie after Marvel publicly announced Edward Norton can go get fucked, basically.

The Wrap reveals Zombieland co-stars Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone are joining an already well-established cast on the film Friends With Benefits. Being directed by Will Gluck, Friends With Benefits stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis as two friends who have recently emerged from disastrous relationships. Patricia Clarkson, Richard Jenkins, Jenna Elfman and Andy Samberg have also signed on. That’s a very intriguing cast, to say the least. Justin Timberlake again? Doesn’t he spend his time writing songs?

Riskybusiness reports that Chris Pratt and Kathryn Morris will join Brad Pitt, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jonah Hill, and Robin Wright on Bennett Miller’s highly anticipated Moneyball, which starts shooting next month.

THR reveals that that kid from The Sixth Sense, Haley Joel Osment, is all grown up and about to play a virgin who teaches sex education at a school in the film Sex Ed. A synopsis so awesome it has every spec screenwriter kicking themselves for not writing this first.

Planet Of The Apes prequel Rise Of The Apes had Brian Cox and Tom Felton join the cast over the week. They’ll accompany James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, and Andy Serkis, who all signed on recently.

Director Steven Soderbergh has added John Hawkes to his film Contagion which has an impressive ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law. Give this casting director a gold star!

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has joined the cast of this fifth Fast And The Furious. It’s called Fast Five. That is all.

There are few directors that perk my interest when it comes to fantasy and science fiction films (just not my bag, baby), but when I hear that Andrew Niccol is making a new flick, I pay attention. After Gattaca, The Truman Show, S1m0ne & Lord Of War, Niccol will next helm the film I’M.MORTAL and has signed one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood right now (literally and figuratively) Miss Amanda Seyfried. (Variety)

Remember that short film The Raven which created a stir online back in April? Latino Review reports the feature film adaptation has been picked up by Universal and Mark Wahlberg is set to star and produce. It was sounding good up until that ‘Mark Wahlberg’ part, huh.

Deadline revealed that Amy Adams will play Janis Joplin in the bio film about her rock n’ roll life. The film is being produced by Wyck Godfrey who is also behind The Twilight Saga. I’ll leave you with that thought.

Cigarettes and Red Vines got the scoop that Paul Thomas Anderson‘s next film The Master, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jeremy Renner, will start production in August 2010. This is awesome because it’s PTA and PSH joining forces again. This makes me happy.

What does not make me happy is Nicolas Cage confirming on The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson that he’ll reprise his role Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider 2. Did you go see the first one? Did you rent it? Someone saw it enough times to afford them a sequel.

Last but not least, Elizabeth Banks will play Tinkerbell in a live action adaptation for Disney called Tink. I’m in favour of this. Here’s why:

TRON: LEGACY continues to look awesome: 5 new images hit the web

TRON: LEGACY continues to look awesome: 5 new images hit the web

Jul 09

I’ve been looking forward to Tron: Legacy ever since I saw the first trailer in March. It’s not the story or the characters that grab me, but rather the pretty visuals and synthetic soundtrack. Something tells me, though, especially looking at the bike-race-crash stuff, that the movie will be more than a little bit silly when it comes out in December. Nevertheless, it continues to look gorgeous in stills, as evidenced by these five new images gleaned from Empire:

Tron: Legacy is due in December 2010, and I really hope it turns out to be as good as I want it to be.

Call Sheet: A weekly run-down of movie casting news and rumours from around the web.

  • Undoubtedly the biggest casting news of the week was the appointment of Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in the all-new upcoming Spider-Man franchise reboot, being directed by Marc Webb.
  • THR revealed the second biggest (potential) casting news of the week: Meryl Streep may be signing on to star in the biopic about Margaret Thatcher, the UK’s first and only female Prime Minister to date. The Iron Lady (yeah…) is being developed by Mumma Mia! director Phyllida Lloyd. Jim Broadbent is in talks to play Margaret Thatcher’s husband, Denis.
  • Scream 4 has so many comings and goings it’s been hard to keep track. It’s even had a complete re-write, which, given production has already started, is ironically scary. Anyway, Adam Brody, Marley Shelton, Erik Knudsen, Alison Brie and Mary McDonnell have all joined the cast over the past week.
  • Amanda Seyfried is set to star in Disney’s live action retelling of Cinderella, written by The Devil Wears Prada scribe Aline Brosh McKenna. I’m excited by this news because it also means I get to post a photo of Amanda’s gorgeous face. See:

  • The New York Times has it on good authority that Paul Reubens will finally return to his PeeWee Herman character in a feature film being directed by Judd Apatow. I don’t know about anyone else, but ‘Pee-Wee’ sorta creeps me out… and not in an entertaining way. At all.
  • There’s a popular comic book (sorry, ‘graphic novel’) called Cowboys & Aliens that is being turned into another comic-book-adaptation-feature-film. People are excited about it because it’s being directed by Iron Man 1 & 2 director Jon Favreau, and currently stars Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford and Sam Rockwell (which, granted, is a very impressive cast). Anyway, All My Children‘s Abigail Spencer just joined the cast this week.
  • Demi Moore will play Miley Cyrus’ mother in an adaptation of the French film LOL. Yep– that’s Laugh Out Loud. Internet talk in movie titles. Brilliant. Ashley Greene, who plays Alice Cullen in Twilight, and Thomas Jane are also in negotiations to join the film.

  • Deadline is reporting that Colin Farrell and Eric Bana are currently in negotiations to star in By Virtue Fall, which will be directed by Up In The Air co-writer Sheldon Turner.
  • Slashfilm reckons Bradley Cooper is no longer interested in M. Night Shyamalan‘s next project. After the bashing The Last Airbender has been getting, I’d say it’s a smart move to get as far away as possible.
  • THR broke the news that Angela Bassett will star alongside Paula Patton in Jumping the Broom, a wedding-themed ensemble comedy directed by Salim Akil. She’s a fantastic actress, but every time I see her I always see Michael Jackson’s mother from that 90′s mini-series The Jacksons.

  • While everyone was scoffing about how fucking stupid an idea the LEGO movie is, Warner Brothers went ahead and hired Chris Miller and Phil Lord to direct. They were responsible for Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, which was surprisingly good and entertaining. So, now what are we supposed to think, WB? You’ve got some fresh directors but a product with NO PLOT… the screenplay/logline/premise is going to be damn interesting, whenever it is revealed.
  • David Fincher‘s The Social Network just got a little more interesting for fans of Nine Inch Nails: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are writing the score for the film.
  • And finally, in a rumour that will never go away for a project that will likely never happen, producer Jerry Bruckheimer still thinks Tom Cruise might be up for Top Gun 2. Because that’s what the world needs right now. It’s not the 80′s any more, Bruckheimer… move on, please.
