Reel Short: The Making of NUIT BLANCHE
Sep 20
Nuit Blanche is one sexy short film directed by Arev Manoukian for Spy Films (featured on Reel Short last week). The film was shot primarily to feature on the Spy Films show reel and demonstrate what the team is capable of.
To help bolster that showreel demonstration they have also created this fantastic behind-the-scenes look at the making of Nuit Blanche. The video runs the same length as the original short, but cuts between the actual footage and the composites as they were in progress. Green screen, wire frames, live-action actors– the lot. It’s fascinating to look at and impressive, considering Nuit Blanche was completely self-funded.

Shot independently and resulting in many lucrative industry offers for Director/Producer/Cinematographer Arev Manoukian, short film Nuit Blanche explores a fleeting moment between two strangers, revealing their brief connection in a hyper real fantasy.
It’s a gorgeous example of taking early film inspirations and blending them with modern-day technology, a style that needs to be handled carefully. The visuals in Nuit Blanche (French translated ‘Sleepless Night‘) are incredibly stunning and took Manoukian and his team at Spy Films over a year to complete.

Reel Short: THE ARCHIVE
Aug 08
Seeing as enjoyed last week’s Reel Short selection The Bowler so much, I thought I’d follow up with another outstanding short documentary from director Sean Dunne. This one is titled The Archive and it comes as no surprise it was officially selected to screen at Sundance last year (2009).
The Archive is about Paul Mawhinney who, over the years, has amassed the world’s largest record collection. Due to health issues and a struggling record industry Paul is being forced to sell his collection.

Reel Short: THE BOWLER

A short documentary about booze, broads and bowling, The Bowler is one of those independent short films I’ll never forget seeing. The photography is spectacular and the subject, Rocky, is naturally engaging.
Meet Rocky Salemmo. He’s a ramblin’ gamblin’ man. For the majority of his adult life Rocky has hustled bowling for a living. Here is his story.
Directed by Sean Dunne.

Reel Short: CL!CK
Jul 25
No, not that comedy starring Adam Sandler that actually made people cry at the end for emotional reasons– not just from the pain of sitting through an Adam Sandler movie…
CL!CK is a wonderfully crafted short film using stop animation, live actors and LEGO blocks to create what turns out to be a wonderful promotion for LEGO. The masterful thing being that I didn’t care I was being sold LEGO blocks because the short film was short, sweet and entertaining. And it made me want to crack out my son’s LEGO box and build some spaceships. Very similar to why Old Spice might be selling well recently; thanks to their outstanding Superbowl commercials people are too busy being entertained to care that they’re actually having yet another product hurled at them.
Ever wonder where big ideas come from? If you’re a fan of LEGO bricks, eureka moments, or guys with odd mustaches, you really should see this. Great ideas just CL!CK.
