Call Sheet: A weekly run-down of movie casting news and rumours from around the web.
Comic-Con 2010 is underway in San Diego leading the way with most headlines across the web this week. Amongst all the preview footage, panels, exhibitions and guest appearances, only a handful of casting news has trickled out of the convention.
Without a doubt the biggest casting news out of Comic-Con came when the cast of The...

One of the few names that will get me into a cinema no matter what is Alfonso Cuarón’s. The fact that his next picture is going to be set in one of my absolute favourite genre milieus — space — is even better. Gravity sounds like a potential classic of the genre, rivalling the likes of the recent Sunshine or Moon, and even the fact that it’s going to be in 3D can’t dampen my...

A comedy movie that sees Downey, Jr. reunited with Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang co-star Monaghan sparks my interest, but this trailer somehow manages to throws a bucket of icy cold water over that meek enthusiasm. Maybe the finished movie will be better, but this trailer for Due Date features way too much of Galifianakis reprising his emotionally stunted man-child schtick from The Hangover, and way too little of...

(Note — this film thankfully has nothing to do with Louis Leterrier’s similarly-named Gravity project)
I’m faced with a dilemma here. Alfonso Cuarón’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Gravity (starring Robert Downey, Jr.) will be shot and released in 3D. I don’t really like 3D. So do I see a slick, fresh film print of the movie and suffer the obviously video-based aesthetic, or to I see...

Where do you go searching for your next project after being axed from the mega-bucks Spider-Man franchise you helped create? Why, you simply follow the yellow brick road.
Deadline reports that Sam Raimi has officially signed to direct the project Oz: The Great and Powerful, a prequel to The Wizard of Oz detailing how the man who becomes Wizard wound up in the land of Oz in the first place (also via rogue...

Matthijs van Heijningen’s The Thing prequel has been slapped with a 29 April 2011 US release date. If you already forgot, Iron Man 2 opened in that slot this year and did pretty good business. But Iron Man 2 had Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr., and Scarlet Johanssen’s chest going for it. What does The Thing have going for it? Some Aussie bloke called Joel Edgerton, John McLane’s daughter from Die...

While ol’ shell-head continues to rake in dosh from his big release last week, it’s time to turn our sights onto Jon Favreau’s next project. He’s been attached to Cowboys And Aliens for some time now, and when I first heard about the project I thought “Oh look, here comes a silly little B-movie project about cowboys and aliens that will probably be in 3D,” but now, after a...

Julie Andrews suggests I start the very beginning (which is apparently a very good place to start), so I’ll do that:
Iron Man 2 starts off bad.
There’s an awkward opening scene establishing Mickey Rourke’s “Whiplash” character that comes off hideously awkward and unnecessary, which plunges quickly into a vomit-inducingly sexist scene involving various swooping close-ups of...

Nothing says ‘the movies’ like a floating heads poster. Coverage for the highly anticipated sequel Iron Man 2 has been in top gear during 2010 as the release date (May 7 in the States, 29 April Down Under) fast approaches. I’ve enjoyed watching the abundance of trailers, teasers, posters and pics spill onto the web and following varied comments and critiques go up in response: mostly, people...
