SPY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD will probably smell bad, too: Aroma-scope trailer

SPY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD will probably smell bad, too: Aroma-scope trailer

Relying on the same awful gag as the first trailer, and including a whole lot of unconvincing visual effects and facepalm-inducing advertisements for ’4-D,’ Spy Kids: All The Time In The World might not be worth your time after all. Do ho ho!

See it in August. Jessica Alba plays the mum, Ricky Gervais plays the dog, annoying children play the annoying children.

There’s no doubting the trend of over-the-top, exaggerated violence in feature films is making a comeback, albeit with permission to look cheap and be classed as B-grade.

Playing on cinema screens in the States right now are  gory newcomers Machete and Piranha 3D, with a slew of direct-to-DVD zombie films that thrive on blood and guts filling video shelves and streaming devices.

Coming soon is Jason Eisener‘s feature adaptation of Hobo With A Shotgun, which promises to be an equally bloody, gory affair. Feature adaptation? Yes — like MacheteHobo started as a faux trailer between the films of Grindhouse (on rare prints only), released by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez in 2007. After the internet created buzz about the retro-cool trailer, a feature was quickly developed and is now close to ready for cinema screens.

Helping director Jason Eisner get the Hobo feature get off the ground was the worldwide success of his similarly violent and grindhouse-gritty short film Treevenge, which collected a bunch of awards at short film festivals in 2009.

No exact dates have be announced yet, but expect to see the feature for Hobo With A Shotgun in 2011.

Here’s a look at the original grindhouse trailer that started it all.

Jessica Alba in Robert Rodriguez’s next film, unfortunately it’s not SIN CITY 2

Jessica Alba in Robert Rodriguez’s next film, unfortunately it’s not SIN CITY 2

After steaming up the screen in Sin City back in 2005, and likely (if the trailers are anything to go by) delivering more of the same in the upcoming Machete, the gentlest whisper of Jessica Alba working with indie director Robert Rodriguez again is enough to whip me into a frenzy.

The film? Spy Kids 4… oh. Shit.

There’s no denying Robert Rodriguez has found success as an action/genre filmmaker (El Marichi trilogy, Sin City, Planet Terror, From Dusk Till Dawn…), but where he’s really made his coin is with the flicks for the kidzzzzz. Especially the Spy Kids series.

He can churn those films out in a pinch and they often triple their production budget at the box office, home sales, rental and TV. The kids love ‘em, the studio enjoys the payday and I’m sure Robert doesn’t mind the chance to continue practicing his craft far away from the close eye of the big-wigs and taking home a hefty pay day for his Troublemaker Studios in the process.

Smart guy.

Smart enough to have the likes of Jessica Alba star in Spy Kids 4: All The Time In The World, even. Confirmed by THR today, Alba will play stepmother to the brand new Spy Kids, because the original kids are now 23 and counting. Production on Spy Kids 4 is expected to start in late in September.

Frank Miller’s GUCCI GUILTY commercial starring Evan Rachel Wood and Chris Evans

Seems Frank Miller has found the format that helps his insistent graphic-novel-style work: 30 second commercials. This one is for Gucci Guilty and stars Evan Rachel Wood (The Wrestler) and Chris Evans (Fantastic Four) and will premiere on TV during the MTV Movie Awards in September.

The style will remind you of Sin City, which Robert Rodriguez wonderfully adapted from Miller’s popular graphic novel of the same name. While we waited patiently for Sin City 2 (if that’ll ever happen), Miller tried to kill us all by using the same style in The Spirit, which was a spectacular failure.

If you can ‘return to form’ in a 30 second commercial, I guess this is it, because I found it sexy, engaging and effective. Watch it embedded below.

New MACHETE red band trailer should not be viewed just after breakfast — trust me

I had the distinct and rare pleasure of catching Grindhouse in its natural habitat: outdoor theatre, double-feature, with faux-trailers played in between, as nature intended. Even among a whole raft of hilarious fake trailers — Thanksgiving was probably my favourite — Machete managed to stand out. The violence, the rugged manliness, the outrageously violent priest — it all just worked.

We’ve been worried that the recent trailers for the full, based-on-the-faux-trailer Machete feature depict a film relatively restrained and sanitised. We were wrong, as IGN happily shows us in the nudity-filled, cuss-laden, gore-splattered trailer below. Just wait a while after eating before watching.

Machete‘s due 3 September 2010 in the States; international release dates forthcoming.
